Alex de Minaur Upsets Rafael Nadal in Sydney
Australian Wins in Three Sets to Give Team Australia 1-0 Lead
De Minaur Delivers Stunning Performance Under the Lights
Alex de Minaur delivered a stunning performance under the lights in Sydney Monday when he overcame World No. 2 Rafael Nadal 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to give Team Australia a 1-0 lead in their ATP Cup tie.
The 23-year-old Australian broke Nadal's serve in the opening game of the match and held serve throughout the first set to claim the early advantage. Nadal fought back in the second set, taking it 6-1, but De Minaur once again broke the Spaniard's serve in the opening game of the third set and held on for a crucial 7-5 victory.
This is the first time that De Minaur has defeated Nadal in their four career meetings. It is also the first time that an Australian player has defeated Nadal in a major tournament since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005.
De Minaur's victory will be a huge boost for Team Australia, who are looking to win their first ATP Cup title. Nadal, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back and help Spain level the tie when he takes on Nick Kyrgios in the second singles match on Tuesday.
