Operation Overlord: The D-Day Landings

A Defining Moment in World War II

The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Overlord, were a pivotal turning point in World War II. On June 6, 1944, an unprecedented force of Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, marking the beginning of the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.

The invasion involved a massive armada of over 5,000 landing craft and 289 escort vessels, carrying more than 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops. The landing forces faced fierce resistance from German defenders, but ultimately secured a foothold on the beaches and began the inland push towards Paris.

The Normandy landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history and a testament to the planning and execution of the Allied forces. They played a critical role in the Allied victory in Europe and remain a defining moment in military history.
