Mpox Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Raises Concerns
Clade I Strain Emerges as a Threat
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently experiencing an outbreak of clade I mpox, formerly known as monkeypox. While clade I mpox is endemic to the DRC, the current outbreak has reached unprecedented levels.
Escalating Numbers and CFR
Since the publication of the Threat Assessment Brief in 2023, the number of mpox cases in the DRC has surged to 14,626, resulting in 654 deaths (CFR 4.5%). Clade I mpox is known to cause more severe illness than other clades, raising concerns among healthcare officials.
Genomic Features and Epidemiology
Epidemiological and genomic data from the outbreak in a mining region in the DRC suggest that the virus is spreading through close contact and contact with infected animals. The strain responsible for the outbreak is distinct from other clades of mpox, highlighting the need for further research and surveillance.
WHO Calls for Emergency Response
On August 7, 2024, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern due to the escalating mpox outbreak in the DRC. The WHO is urging countries to strengthen surveillance, implement infection control measures, and provide equitable access to vaccines and treatments.
