Mystery Unraveled: Rabies Behind Seal Attacks
After three years of investigation, scientists in South Africa have identified the culprit behind a series of disturbing marine incidents: rabies. Veterinary experts, marine mammal specialists, and scientists have pinpointed the outbreak as the cause of uncharacteristic aggression among Cape fur seals, which have attacked surfers and beachgoers in Cape Town.
Increased Risk to Humans
The outbreak has raised concerns for public safety, as rabies is a fatal viral disease that can be transmitted to humans through animal bites. To date, 11 seals have tested positive for the virus, and at least 72 people in South Africa have suffered bites or scratches from the affected animals.
